Description
Welcome To 3rd Annex::..
My Mother ran the Art Dept on the Psychiatric Unit in a local hospital in 1960's and early 70's. Patients who were not on lock-down were allowed to utilize the Art Shop (part of Occupational Therapy) as part of their rehabilitation. The Art Shop (or 3rd Annex) was very popular at the time. Patients deemed it "Far-Out" and "In the Groove" and it was "The place to be"... The music was that of the 60s psychedelic era ~ their music and it permeated the atmosphere. It was the beginning of the Counter-Culture and most of the patients were young drug addicts who were in rehabilitation. Their artworks were wild, surreal, fantastical creations ~ visions created by the demons and angels who whispered to their drug damaged psyches.
As a young kid in the late 1960's, I spent much of the summer vacation in the art department helping out. I did the "dangerous things" the patients weren't allowed to do -- things that involved scissors and wires and staple-guns (you get the idea) I loved doing this! This would NEVER be allowed with today's oppressive "nanny-state" regulations, which is a damn shame. I learned more about art and human behavior (and psycho-babble) on 3rd Annex, than in most my years of school. The experience created a bond with my Mom and fostered my love for art. I wouldn't trade that for anything..... EAM
Art therapy utilizes a persons creative faculties in the area of art to develop their physical and emotional health. Its roots are entrenched in the concept of relying on self-expression to awaken an individuals own problem solving capacities. This form of therapy focuses on a persons positive well-being and strives to increase their self-awareness, self-esteem, and productive behavior traits. Art therapy combines traditional techniques found in psychotherapy and counseling with the creative process required in manifesting visual art and human development. Developers of art therapy include Margaret Naumburg, Edith Kramer, Hanna Kwiatkowska, Harriet Wadeson, and Florence Kane.
Healing through Art Therapy
Art therapists have a comprehensive understanding of the powerful healing effect that the creative process has on the client, and they use psychological, spiritual, and artistic theories coupled with clinical techniques to achieve the desired outcome. Valuation tools and treatment methods are guided by artistic principals, and clinicians share these findings cooperatively with other treating professionals. Art therapists work with individuals as well as groups, families, and communities to improve the awareness of clients' own emotional states. Their services are an integral part of many rehabilitation and mental health facilities, forensic and medical industries, and various other social and community institutions that strive to benefit the whole through the use of the creative process.
